The theoretical physics discipline of Lanzhou University was established in the 1950s. For more than half a century, it has trained a large number of high-level talents for the country. It has achieved outstanding results in mathematical physics, general relativity, quantum field theory, and statistical physics, and has been widely recognized by domestic and international experts. Since the establishment of the "Theoretical Physics Communication Platform of Lanzhou University" in 2010, it has received continuous rolling support from the Theoretical Physics Special Fund of the National Natural Science Foundation of China for academic exchange. Special research work has been carried out in the fields of gravitational theory and cosmology, particle physics and nuclear physics, condensed matter theory, quantum information and quantum optics, statistical physics and complex systems. A theoretical physics research team with a certain scale has been formed. Currently in the theoretical physics discipline, there are 1 part-time Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences and 38 full-time teachers. Among the talent team, there are 1 Changjiang Distinguished Professorship of Ministry of Education, 2 gainers of National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars of China, 3 gainers of National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars, 2 Young top-notch talents of National Ten Thousand Talent Program, 1 winners of National “Hundred, Thousand, and Ten Thousand Project", 1 Science and technology innovation leader of Ministry of Science and Technology, 1 winner of China Youth Science and Technology Award, 1 winner and 1 nominee of the National Hundred Outstanding Doctoral Dissertations of the Ministry of Education, and 4 gainers of New Century Outstanding Talents Support Program of the Ministry of Education.
